  1. Cromwell invaded the south of Ireland and did much damage there. He went along the roads and burned all the houses as they were all thatched at that time.   2. Castlemartyr can justly be numbered among the interesting historic places in Ireland. The fertile soil of the countryside, the demesne in particular, made it a coveted possession in such a way that many battles were fought over it.
