    they continued the hunt until they succeeded, if if possible, because at that time the boys would not go from house to house without having a wren tied on the holly bush which was carried by the leader of the procession on St. Stephen's Day.
    Occasionally the reason given by a person for refusing to contribute was that it was cruelty to kill the "poor innocent little wren". But if the dead wren was not to be seen others gave its absence as an excuse for not giving any contribution.
