  2. A famine broke out in Ireland in the year 1848. It was caused by the potato crop failing. The potatoes rotted in the drills. Only one or two stalks grew in a field of potatoes. Some fields of potatoes grew up but the blight killed the stalks and they rotted away. The people lived on herrings and on indian meal bread. They made thin indian porridge. A herring and a farl of indian bread would feed three or four for one day. People were got dead everywhere. Any potatoes the people could get they sowed in drills like corn.
