Long ago the dead people used to rise after midnight.

Long ago the dead people used to rise after midnight. This man was coming home from a fair after midnight and he saw a spirit on the side of the road. He went over to the spirit and struck it with his stick. The spirit struck back, and they fought till the man went home. He went into the house and next morning his father found him inside in the kitchen, and he had a big cut over his eye. The man went to town and a doctor put a plaster on the cut. The man went to mass the following Sunday. When the mass was over the man was going home. when the spirit started to fight again. The priest came out and read the prayers for the dead, and the spirit went away and was never seen again.
