   Long ago an atheist who owned the field tried to drain St. Cummin's well. He sent three men to shut up the well because he did not want the people to be trampling his grass. After a few days the three men got blind and they could not shut it up. Then himself got an iron chain and tied it around a dog's neck and then tied a big stone to it and threw the dog into the well. The next morning when he opened his door the dog was outside alive and well.
   Another atheist tried to close up Saint Cuthbert well. He was cleaning the land and he had about fifty men working. There was a big stone in the field and the man called all the men together to roll the stone and to let it fall into the well. At first it rolled on very easily until it came to the brink of the well. Then it stopped and all the men in
