Famine.
In the year 1846 the famine began in Ireland because of the failure of the potato crop. The people died of hunger and diseases. The landlord started public works in this district but instead of giving the employees wages he gave them two quarts of porridge in the week. For this district there was a Depot erected for boiling the porridge and it was situated in the townland of Mullaghduff. After some time the English Government sent in a cargo of rotten Indian meal which was moving with maggots. The poor starving people ate this unhealthy food and the result was thousands died from cholira and fever. Deaths were so numerous that they were not able to have coffins supplied for all so they had one coffin made from which the bottom could be removed
