In the time of the famine people worked for four pence a days or a quart of yellow meal which ever they would like best. The people ate potatoes three times a day. If they had yellow meal they would eat it instead of the potatoes. There was a man living in Ballyporeen and all his spuds rotted and he had no sets. He did not let on the people he was so poor. He gathered a máilín of small stones and sat them. When the time came to dig them he had the best potatoes in the country. When he was setting them he shook holy water on every sgiolán.In the farm of Jereimah McGrath it is said that a row of houses was on the south and east of the house. It is said that they could not pay the rent and they were put of their farms and their farms was gave to Darby McGrath Jeremiah McGrath's grandfather.
