- Some of the old houses are made of mud walls and are thatched, and some of the old houses have been repaired lately with zinc roofs. In most of the houses in Mussel Lane, the oldest part of the town, the bed is in the kitchen. It is usually against the western wall of these houses, which is opposite the door. All the fireplaces are against the gable walls. The chimneys are of mortar and stone, and are very wideThere was only one house without windows in the town, but that has fallen during last Winter, and all the houses have chimneys. The floors are made of cement. There are many half doors in Mussel Lane, and in the other old houses in the town.
