1. Our Churn

   We have a churn at home. It is about 6 years old. The height of it is about 3 feet. It is wide in the bottom and top and narrow in the middle. The parts of the churn are called "stays". There are four hoops on the churn. There is a lid on the churn with a hole in it to let the "dash" come up and down. There is a round piece of wood like the shape of a saucer with a hole in the middle of it which is put down on the handle of the dash and fixed on the hole of the lid. This is called a "muddler". It keeps the milk from dashing out. We know when the butter is made because it comes up on the lid of the churn. We take the butter off the milk with a buttermilk. We use the buttermilk with porridge and for making bread. There is a round piece of wood deeper and bigger than a saucer called a cuppin for lifting the buttermilk out of the churn.
