The teachers used to teach many subjects. Among the subjects taught were reading, arithmetic and writing. The language spoken in these schools was Irish.
Writing was usually done with chalk on a slate but the teachers used to write with quills.

The only three Hedge schools that are remembered around Slane were at Thurinstown Creewood and the Red Cross on the Grangegeeth Slane road. This school stood in a small field beside a house about four or five perches from the angle of the cross.
It was taught by a Mr Powderly of the Red Cross the principle subjects that were taught were reading, writing and arithmetic in English, as it was the only hope of obtaining a
