- Of the several historic ruins, which meet the eye of the traveller, touring around West Cork, that historic Castle of Carriganass is one of the principal and perhaps the most interesting to the traveller. The castle is situated some six miles from Bantry and adorns one of the beautiful valleys between the Caha mountains.
Perhaps more than four hundred years (ago) have passed since the castle was erected, in the valley where its ruins now stand. Its date of foundation is not known, but it was called Carraiganass, because at the south side of the Castle which stands on the rocky bank of the river, which flows past it, there is a little waterfall, thus it gets its name "Carraig-an-easaig" or the Rock of the Waterfall.
Carriganass Castle was one of the strongholds of O'Sullivan Beare, during the end of the sixteenth century. In the year 1601 Carew, having taken Dunboy Castle advanced to Carriganass. But the sub chieftain here, being(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
