deprived of his Chieftainship by Donal O'Sullivan Beare, was then at enmity with him, and therefore fought with the English at Kinsale. So Carew did not interfere with Carriganass Castle but advanced on his way.
This castle is also connected with legendary history. There is still a beautiful poem preserved in connection with the ballad history of Ireland. Its name is the "Revenge of Donal Cumm", which was written by the Cork Poet, Calnan. The poem is based on the legend that St. Leger stabbed Donal's wife in Gougane Barra shrine. Donal, on hearing this went to St. Leger who lived at Carriganass as an English gentleman, and been admitted as an English monk, killed him. Then having cast his body out through one of the windows of the castle into the river nearby, he leaped across the latter, and thus escaped the hands of his enemies.
All that now remains at Carriganass Castle is the Western gable, which is some fifteen feet high. The remaining three walls stand breast high. The walls of the courtyard are all perfect for the most part, and are about ten feet high.
