    this school was known as Diarmuid Calnan and he belonged to the Drinagh parish. He lodged in a neighbouring house and in payment he taught the children of the house and sometimes did a little work.
    There was no furniture of any kind in this school. The children who attended each brought a sod of turf and these were placed in a row on the ground and a plank of timber placed on top of them and this was the seat used by the children On this they sat while doing their writing on a slate - just an ordinary slate used for building purposes. They used smooth soft stones for writing on the slates as there were no slate pencils
