- About forty or fifty years ago all the work done in saving the corn was done by the hand. When the corn was ripe it was cut by a reaping hook. The man came on his knees and cut bit by bit until the field was finished. It took a long time to do the work but there was not as much corn then as now.Later the scythe was invented but not for a long time would the old people allow it be used for reaping corn for fear of waste.
