- When people have cross cows to milk they put a "Buarach" or a spancel on them. Nowadays the spancel is made of rope and is knotted round the cows hind legs so that she cannot kick. Some years ago people were very careful as to how they made the spancel. It was made of hair cut from the cow's tail or the horse's tail. This hair was boiled and then twisted very hard into a kind of rope with an eye at each end. Then a small piece of stick called a "Buairicín" is put in at one end and this fastens the spancel. This Buairicín was made of palm branch which was always taken to the church and blessed on Palm Sunday.
