stunted firs and ferns. Old people say that a boy while hunting in the vicinity of the fort started a hare. His dog wounded the hare which escaped. The boy and dog pursued it to the fort. To the boy's surprise, when he got inside he could see no hare but a woman bleeding from a wound.
The fort at Ballydunlea is similar in shape to the fort at Lohercannon. I heard a very old lady telling a strange story about that fort. She said that she knew a young girl who went picking blackberries near the fort. The first blackberry she picked she dropped into her mouth. The action was hardly completed when a stone dropped as if from nowhere and broke her foot. She died very soon after.
