The people would never survive the famine were it not for the assistance they got from O'Kelly who had houses in Knockavanney and Gallagh doing work for which there was no need; just to help the people. He employed scores of them on those farms and paid them a few pence a day for the work they and this helped them out a good deal. He also gave them money. he was landlord of all this place except for a small piece of land over which a man named Herd was landlord.
He also had all his oats milled into oat-meal and distributed among the people some of whom made stirabout out of it and others mixed it through milk and drank it. This drink was called by some súidín or swedeen and by others prásán. When the potatoes failed the chief food the people of this place had was oat-meal milled from oats. Some had corn themselves and those who had not got some from O'Kelly of
Knockavanney and from their neighbours. The people also got money from the Archbishop of Tuam and the priests.
