Some people were of the opinion that Johnny was insane because sometimes before he would go into a house he would walk up and down outside talking to himself or if he were walking down the road he would throw his stick up in the air and begin roaring and bawling. Most people said that these antics were mere pretence to frighten the people.
Johnny Clarke was about six feet tall and was very savage and cross-looking. He had a long black beard and black hair which was of late years slightly greying and usually carried a big black-thorn stick with him and if he happened to be going through a field where there would be big thistles growing or tall ears of corn he would begin hitting right and left at the thistles with his big stick and shouting and roaring at the same time.
Most people disliked Johnny because he was very dishonest and also a drunkard. The people of the place used to say that he would "steal the eye out of your head if he got half a chance".
