- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)the next morning they find the man or woman. They then are very angry. On Chalk Sunday there is another famous custom. This is called Chalk Sunday because on that day the young people of the countryside get chalk and put three or four strokes of chalk on the clothes of unmarried people, especially those who are old. The people do not like this at all, and are very angry when they wear a new suit because the boys stroke their backs with chalk. They steal the chalk from the school-master. Chalk Sunday is the Sunday after Ash Wednesday. It is also the first Sunday of Lent. On Chalk Sunday everybody is to be seen with a few strokes of the chalk on his back.
