  2. People have worn some covering on their feet from ancient times. There earliest footwear was sandal mats of woven grass. strips of hides or flat pieces of wood to protect the soles of the feet were bound round the ankle. From time to time those were improved on, and the sandals became the shoe, sandals are still worn by some orders of priests. Another shoe brought down from olden time is the clog, which is still used by country men in Winter or by mill Workers.
