Tom Banin was a great story teller and at night it was a usual thing to see him sitting beside some farmer’s fireplace telling stories to the little children of the district. My father was one of the boys who used be with Tom and this is one of the stories that told him. Tom was a potato digger and he earned his living by travelling from farmer to farmer and digging the potatoes during the season. One day as Tom was coming home from his work he had to cross a hill to get to the farmer he was working for. Terry his dog was in front as usual and as Tom was crossing the hill he saw his dog looking at a big hole on the other side of the ditch. When Tom went down to the hole he was amazed for there standing at the mouth of the hole was a beautiful lady. The lady said “good evening Tom” and he answered “good evening ma’am”.
