  1. Before the National Schools were established in 1831 the teachers used to teach their pupils in old huts. They were called hedge-schools. The teachers had no fixed abode but they used to sleep with the pupils in their turn. They got no salary from the government but the pupils had to pay so much a week. These schools were not very satisfactory as they had no desks, and it was with quills the pupils wrote.
