- Candles were made in our village in John Queenan's house. This is how they used to do it. First they would get strong blades of grass and dry them beside the fire. Next they would get lard and melt it. When it would be well melted they would plaster it round the grass and leave it beside the fire until it would dry. Then they would dip it in grease so they were ready for use. This industry stopped thirty years ago.Patrick Foody of Rathglass had a contract of thatching in our dis-(continues on next page)
