    if any person, man or woman, happened to come into the dairy while the butter was making, he had to put his hand on the churn handle and give it a twist, for it was supposed that if he failed to do that he would take away the butter of the house.
    When the butter was made it was taken out of the churn and washed three or four times then it was well salted for fear it would get bad before market day. When it was properly washed and salted it was placed in firkins. At first a layer of salt was placed in the bottom of the firkin, then a layer of butter then another layer of salt then a layer of butter and so on until the firkin was full up.
