- In by gone times the country people bought no candles instead they made their own candles from the fat of sheep or goats. At first the sheep or goats were killed and the fat was rendered, then it was poured into shapes called moulds. Before pouring it into the moulds a wick was attached on to a nail and this was put through the bottom of the mould and held stiff whilst the rendered fat was being poured in. It was then left to cool and when cold the mould was dipped into warm water and the candle drawn out ready for use. In the village of Lixnaw there lived a certain woman by the name of Mahony, and she made candles not only for her own use but also(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
