- Mostly all the land in north Kerry and especially around about Lixnaw is limestone land, thus most of the people make their own lime - that is a kind of powder got from burned lime stone.
At first a kiln has to be built in the place where the lime stone is very plentiful, this kiln is circular in shape and generally about six feet in diameter and varying from thirty to forty feet in depth. It has to be lined with brick too because the constant burning would wear away any other lining. Underneath the kiln is the "kiln house" where the lime is put, or into which it falls from the kilns is more correct.
