Extract from an article I wrote when making a collection of Irish words & phrases
used in ordinary conversation by our people,
who never for a moment advert to the fact
that these words, etc are pure Irish:-
"An analysis of my collection shows
that the words refer to
1. mental & physical defects;
2. mean & contemptible traits of character;
3. Names of weeds & herbs;
4. domestic & farming utensils & instruments,
many of wh. are long since obsolete.
"Thus any middle-age man will
anatomise the "súiste" be now in a trice; buailteán,
gad agus colpa; not forgetting the dúirníní nor the cláirín
nor the gob fhéir. The seana-bhean and the seanduine
do not approve of the frithín's woven by the modern
toice, nor of the "lollamalshl" she makes
