  1. The day of the regatta one of sunshine and light breezes. Four boats left the island before noon. There were crowds of people promenading the quayside, Where apple women thimble men three card trick men, Tom Laurence and his air gun wheedled their half pence from them. A fortune teller assisted by a bird, that picked the summary of the enquirers fate, did a roaring trade, from thousands of leaflets.
