    wick. The light was feeble and people usually retired early.
    The floor was earthen and was sprinkled with sand. In the winter rushes were spread on the floor.
    When the family sat to the table the potatoes were speed in a skilled and placed on the table. Each individual had not a plate as now. There was no separate serving. Each person took a potato, ate it and then took another and so on. When plates were first used two ate off each plate.
    When fresh meat was available it was cooked on a spit.
