Long ago the old people used to have different marriage customs from nowadays. Some of those customs are to be found in some parts of the country still. But in other parts these customs are not known.
Long ago in the early parts of the seventeenth century the people used to go to the marriage on horseback. The bride used to go to the chapel on a black horse accompeed by her father. Coming home, the bride and bride-groom used to ride on the one horse. Around Easter and June July and August were the luckiest months. To get married in May was supposed to be very unlucky. There is an old poem about the days of the week on which you were to get married
Monday for health,
Tuesday for wealth,
Wednesday the best day of all,
Thursday for losses,
Friday for crosses,
Saturday no day at all.
On the marriage morning the bride used to cry before leaving the house. Every bride on her marriage day used to wear "something old something new, something(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Faisnéiseoir
