  1. In the years 1860 and 1870,there was a man by the name of Patrick Carroll of Ballytarsna who kept a hedges school in a house. The subjects taught were arithmetic, spelling, reading. The writing was done with a pencil and slate. There was a large table in the middle of the floor with forms all around the table for seating the pupils. There was no blackboard. There was no Irish taught. That hedges school remained in existence until 1880.
