- In our district there is a rock where Mass was said in the penal days. It is situated in the townland of Behey, in a field belonging to Mr. Frank Lee.
It is a very large rock and the priest used to say Mass there, when he would get the chance. There were holes cut out in the rock to hold the Holy Water, and the wine. The priest used to lodge in the neighbours' house at that time. If the priest was in the middle of Mass, and that the soldiers came, he would have to run away and hide himself.
On one occasion when a priest was saying Mass, he happened to see the enemies coming down Young's hill so he ran away and hid himself in a clutch of whins. After some time the soldiers went away across the hills, and the priest came back and finished Mass.
The clutch of whins, which the priest hid is now called the Priests Cave. Sometimes when the weather was wet, the priest said Mass in barns or in some sheltery place.
