   Shrove Tuesday - Pancakes are made and are rolled up. Various articles are put in pieces of paper and rolled in e.g. a button, a thimble, a piece of an eggshell. A person getting the button will marry a tailor (or dressmaker). Thimble - will be an old maid. The proper milk to be used for pancakes is "beastings" or first milk of newly calved cow. It was considered a sign of good luck and prosperity to have "beastings" for Shrove Pancakes.

   First Sunday of Lent - Smutty Sunday. All marriageable girls who were not "asked" before Shrove Tuesday went to Mass on first Sunday of Lent in very bad humour, hence name.
