    still quite common in this locality and are always worn in farmyards in Winter. Some school boys wear clogs too. They are very dry and warm but hard on stockings.
    Leather was tanned at Ballycanew (four miles south of Gorey). Mr. Furlong's father skinned a cow of his which died and brought the hide to Bass of Ballycanew to be tanned for to cover a bellows.
    Referring back to the shoemakers; these didn't stock leather like men of their trade I knew in the South-west of Ireland. The person brought the Adhbhar Bróg and was charged for the making.
    As an aside: the blacksmiths here do not stock iron but merely charge for the making of horse shoes, we'll say, the material being purchased by the owner at the local shop.
