- (continued from previous page)Road. These roads lead to Tullamore, Kilbeggan, and Tyrellspass. They were made in the time of the Famine. We know of no very old roads. They are still used. The roads were made to give relief during the time of the Great Famine. They are very winding roads and they were so made in order to prolong the relief work among the starving people for as long a period of time as possible. We have no knowledge as to the conditions of work and the rate of pay of the people who were employed in the construction of these roads . There are no old paths or by ways in the district. Before bridges were made the rivers were crossed by means of fords at shallow places. We known of no names for these fords in the district. There are no local customs about cross roads. There are no heaps of stones, crosses or monuments of any other kind erected in memory of the dead to be seen along the roadsides in our district; neither are there any Mass paths in our district. from Mrs Redding, Atty Connor
