When times were bad in this district people lived on two meals a day. Oaten stirabout, potatoes and oaten bread were the chief kinds of food. Potatoes were eaten at both meals. Men brought lumps of oaten bread with them when they went to work. The very poor used buttermilk. Those with cows used new-milk. The table was placed in the centre of the floor and all sat around it.The potatoes were put on the centre of the table. They were often placed in a low(?) basket made of sallyrods. Farmers and others who could afford it used bacon. Bacon is still used in the morning and middle of the day in nearly all the farmers houses in this district. Very little fresh meat is used. Farmers and labourers kill and cure their own pigs.Noggins were used when stirabout was used at a meal. They were washed and polished and placed on the dresser when the meal was over.There was not much tea drunk in this district(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
