- When the farmer has the land ready for the potatoes he drills it with a double mould-board plough. The famers of this district have taken up a new practice of late years for planting the potatoes. It is to spread the farmyard manure on the land in Winter and plough it into it. In doing this the farmer has several advantages namely his potatoes will be drier, it will save time in Spring when he is busy and the droppers will have a nicer job.
In Spring he cross-ploughs it, harrow it and rolls it. Then he drills it with a double mould-board plough. This plough has a marker on it which after the first drill is opened the track of the next one is made.
When the ploughman goes up or down the field once he opens two half drills. Then sometimes the farmer puts, Superphosphate on the land.
