- The first potato blight came in 1846. The people had plenty of wheat but they had to sell it to pay the large rents of that time. There was foreign corn coming into Ireland, but the English Government stopped it. People ate raw turnips and weeds.
- The townland of Kilaidmee was very thickly populated before the famine, and people can still point out houses that are in ruins and were occupied before it.
A fog came in from the ocean in August, and blighted the stalks, causing to blacken and rot, it spread quickly, and the whole crop was ruined.
