- St. Finnan was connected with our district, and also with Ardfinnan which was called after him. He had a church on a hill above the village.
This Saint had two brothers called St. Peacon, and St. Drennan. Ballybacon was called after St. Peacon, Ballydrennan was called after St. Drennan.
St. Finnan had a monastery opposite the present Protestant church, and after his death he was buried in the monastery grounds.
There is a story told that the church of St Drennan was once attacked by a crowd of wicked men from the Galtees. The men of Ballybacon, and Ardfinnan took the side of St Drennan, and a pitched battle took place. The wicked men were driven back without the church beinf injured, and the Saints were so pleased at this that they got a favour from God that anyone from these parishes could not be killed in war or by lightning, and this favour has always been enjoyed in these parts.- Faisnéiseoir
