- Bread was made from wheat, barley, and oats grown locally. Flour was made in our district by grinding it between two stones called querns. Anyone alive in our district now does not remember querns being used. The principal kinds of bread are whole meal bread got from wheat, and oaten meal, sometimes they mixed whole meal, and potatoes, and they called this potato cake.Buttermilk was nearly always added when kneading the dough. Nearly everyone in this district used to bake every day. Two light strokes were drawn across the cake in the form of a cross to give air to the cake.
