Councillor Maunsell set out immediately in his carriage and pair after the captors who were making for Borrisokane. He caught up on the party in the town. The "redcoats" had the poor priest tied in the middle of a block-wheel car.
"Drive through them" ordered Maunsell to his driver "and flog them from side to side."
The coach man dashed his horses through the party shouting "make way for Councillor Maunsell."
"What does this mean" roared out the angry, surprised officer in charge of the soldiers.
Without speaking a word Maunsell got out of his carriage and went towards the priest saying "Is that you, Father Fitzgerald."
"Unbind him at once" he said, turning sternly on the officer "or if not it will be worse for you. I order it in the name of Lord Limerick."
When the priest was set free he was brought by his deliverer to the church, where the waiting people cheered both men.
