- Food in Olden Times
Three meals a day was a given rule. Breakfast, dinner, and supper. The breakfast consisted of potatoes boiled, porridge, and milk. Dinner consisted of potatoes, turnips, nettles and flour dip, salt and sour milk.
The table was placed in the center of the floor with a canvas bag on. The potatoes were strained and turned out on it.
Wheaten bread was generally used. It was made from ground wheat wet with buttermilk and baked on a griddle. Meat was used only on Thursdays and Sundays. American bacon was the general kind. Salt herrings were very much used instead of meat. They were placed in the tongs over a good fire, turned and served with milk for sauce.
