and bricks or stones. People near me do not remember a house without a chimney or having a fire in the middle of the house on the floor.
Some houses long ago had wooden shutters instead of glass in the windows which were usually very small.
As there was no cement in olden times yellow clay was used for floors. A little water was mixed with the clay to make ti thin. It was well plastered over the floor then, and when dry, was nearly as hard as cement.
Half-doors are still to be seen in most country houses and some small houses in towns have them also. They are used to keep out a breeze and yet allow plenty of air to come in.
Turf and sticks were the chief materials used for a fire long ago. It was in later years that coal came into use.
People always made their own candles before. Tallow or cows'-fat was used in this work. Rush-lights or dips were also used to give light at night.
