- Some years ago people had three meals a day, breakfast, dinner and supper. There was scarcely any difference in these meals as potatoes was the staple food of the people then. Breakfast was eaten very early in the morning as people were often at work at dusk. Sometimes a good deal of work was done before breakfast as the people had to wait until the potatoes were boiled. Dinner was eaten at mid-day and supper about six o'clock in the evening.
Potatoes were eaten at every meal and butter-milk was drunk. As people made their own butter then, butter-milk was very plentiful and they always had enough of that. Salt was the only thing that was eaten with potatoes, but now and again they used melted grease. People of olden times were very fond of new-milk that went sour. If there was a big family in a house the table was put in the middle of the floor, to allow them all to sit around it. The table was left by the wall if there were only a few in the family.
Black coarse wheaten bread was also eaten years ago. This was made of wheat coarsely ground between two stones, and was sometimes mixed with boiled potatoes. It was very coarse as the(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
