“Jackie the Lantern (sic) was a blacksmith...”
(ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)Jackie got sick and he went to bed. The Devil came to him and said
"Come on now, you are one of our saints."
"I will go with you now" said Jackie. "Sit down until I do a job in the forge."
The Devil sat down on the stool, and he clung to it. Jackie went away to bed again and left him there. In the morning he asked Jackie to let him go, and Jackie did.
He remained in the forge for three days after. He was very sorry he had nothing to spend. He thought of the wishes he got from the little man. He put his hand in his pocket and found a shilling. He went to the public house and drank it. Then he came home. He wasn't long at home when the Devil came for him. He said "You have no excuse now. Come on."
Jack said "I will be with you now, only I must get a bit of heath to sweep the forge"
"Before you go" the Devil said, "you might like a drink."
"Alright" says Jackie "come on and we'll have one"
"Ill go into your pocket in the form of a mouse" says the Devil, and away they went to the public house.
