Just before the stalks come up the farmer ploughs the trenches in order to have some earth. Then he earths the potatoes with a shovel.
When the stalks are fairly strong, the trenches are sloughed for second earth. The farmer has to be very careful this time, in putting the earth around the stalks, because he might cover some of them.
When the stalks are nearly fully grown they are sprayed.
First the farmer gets a barrel of clean water. Then he gets some blue-stone and puts it in a bag, and fastens the bag to the top of the barrel leaving the blue-stone touching the water. Then he gets some washing soda, and melts it in an ovan or pot over the fire. When the blue-stone is melted he puts the melted washing soda into the water. Then he stirs the water with a stick and after a while it is a(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
