This saint was named Brigid and she made a cross out of rushes and she prayed to it. There is a cross made of straw or rush and placed on the roof of houses on the first of February which is held in honour St. Brigid.
This custom is dying out nowadays.
Palm is used on palm Sunday because on the first palm sunday the people waved their palms and olive branches when Our Lords was coming with joy.
On May children long ago used to gather armfuls of mayflowers.
These they used to strew at the entrance gate of every field and at the doors of houses and out of offices and on the house tops.
They used to say that it was to keep ill luck and to bring good luck.
