   floor. Sometimes dry rushes were strewn on the floor to soak the dampness. In this poor house the peasant had to support a wife and a decent family.
   Later they began to build houses of stones and mortar but yet they could not increase the size. The pigs had to be kept inside in the cupboard of the dresser. The doors had no bolts except a stick going across inside and fitted into the walls called "Mavroc Camornn." They were so low that a tall person would have to stoop when entering the house. When they got leave to build houses for the animals they dug a deep trench all round the house to drain away the water.
   In 1921'22 when Ireland got back her own Parliament the Government, and especially the present Government gave a grant of eighty pounds to farmers to build new houses, and forty pounds to repair old ones. Now what a change came over the country. Most of the farmers built new houses, and to-day there are but few thatched ones, except in the country-place
