- Long ago when there were no doctors and when medical science was not what it is now the people had to rely on many remedies to cure from the ills that from time to time attacked the human beings. So to get well the people resorted to herbs, witchcraft and holy wells. The tubberage well is situated in a little rock in the townland of Balleighan on the upper road leaving from Moville to Shrove and is marked by a stone cross. This well in olden times was supposed to have curing qualities for sore eyes, mumps in children and warts on hands. Each patient when he visited the well bathed the affected part and recited some prayers. The rag which was used for bathing was tied to a bush above the cross. Many genuine cures are reported to have taken place.
