    called the Penal Laws, and there was a law that any priest that would be caught saying mass in a chapel would be put to death and they had to say mass in the mountains and hillsides. There is a stone altar at Ballyalaban where mass used to be celebrated during the Penal Days. This altar is marked with a small stone cross.
